Chocolate and Merlot pairing

Merlot wines originated from France with Bordeaux region being one of the biggest producers. Merlots vary from light-bodied to rich full-bodied wines.

Although merlot wines have a relatively high alcohol content level, a lot of them can be drunk on their own and maybe this is why they are really popular.

Merlots are deep colored and full of berry/fruity flavors like blackberry, blueberry, cherry, plum mixed with a hint of herbs or black pepper and even chocolate. Thus they are a good company to chocolate - particularly dark varieties and chocolate confections.

Merlot has some resemblance with Cabernet Sauvignon and is often blended with the latter to give it a different taste.

Chocolate with berry and fruit presence in them help bring out the same qualities in wine. So when you do tasting of Merlot and chocolate include some fruit and berry flavored truffles, dried cherries and other fruits in chocolate or fresh fruits dipped in chocolate glaze. As Merlot is softer and lighter red wine than Cabernet Sauvignon you can try all these in dark and milk chocolate varieties, still avoiding very sweet white chocolate.
